OptiLight IPL treatment for dry eye and MGD at Clinica London

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is a leading cause of dry eye disease. OptiLight IPL is a non-invasive treatment used to relieve the acute or chronic symptoms of ocular surface inflammation, meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye. It is a safe and effective treatment that can reduce your long-term reliance on artificial tears and medicated eye drops and tablets.

At a glance: OptiLight IPL therapy

What is OptiLight?

OptiLight is an intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment used to treat Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) as well as other causes of dry eye. It targets the telangiectatic vessels feeding the eyelids and the ocular surface inflammation which underlies MGD.

OptiLight IPL uses pulses of light targeted at the tiny blood vessels near the eyes to reduce inflammation and stimulate the meibomian glands to resume normal, healthy meibum production.

How does OptiLight work?

Certain wavelengths of light create changes within our cells — and IPL takes advantage of this. It acts on the blood vessels around the eyes, helping treat the poorly functioning meibomian glands and producing an anti-inflammatory effect. It helps relieve aggravated dry eye and prevent further flares of MGD.

Who is IPL therapy suitable for?

OptiLight IPL is suitable for patients with ocular surface inflammation and moderate to severe dry eye symptoms caused by MGD. It is also used to treat eyelid and ocular surface inflammation from other conditions including allergic eye disease.

It is an excellent option for those who have not found sufficient relief from drops, warm compresses, or lid hygiene alone.

What are the risks of IPL?

OptiLight IPL is a safe, non-invasive treatment with extremely low risk. It is a bright warm light that does not harm the eye. You will be given protective eye covers to wear during the treatment to shield your eyes from the bright light.

When will I notice results?

Most people feel the effects after a few hours, but initial treatment requires several sessions. Four to five sessions are usually required over four months, after which the effects build and drops can often be phased out.

We have proven good results in approximately 85% of patients. Maintenance treatment sessions may be required at 4 to 6 month intervals.

How long do the effects last?

After your initial treatments, IPL lasts for around 6 months. We recommend 2 to 3 maintenance sessions a year for reliable relief and continuous treatment.

Your OptiLight IPL procedure at Clinica London

We have a structured and thorough approach to all treatments, starting with an expert assessment that will inform and guide your individual care plan.

1

Consultation

Your journey begins with a thorough investigative consultation. Our specialists will examine your eyelids, eyelid margins and ocular surface, and measure your vision, eye pressure and tear osmolarity.

The specialist will assess meibomian gland function, measure tear film quality and identify the underlying causes of your dry eye to confirm that OptiLight IPL is the right solution for you.

2

The treatment

You will be seated in a comfortable chair, with protective shields placed over your eyes. A cool gel is applied to the treatment area before the OptiLight IPL device delivers precise pulses of light to the skin around your eyes.

The sensation is often described as a gentle, warm flick. The treatment is designed to improve gland function and stimulate the glands to work normally again.

3

Expression & aftercare

Following the IPL treatment, your therapist may perform a gentle, non-invasive gland expression to resume normal oil flow. You can go about your daily activities immediately after the session with no visible signs of treatment.

We will schedule your next appointment and advise on any aftercare.

What is dry eye disease and how does OptiLight IPL help?

Meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye

Dry eye is a common chronic condition with several causes; anterior blepharitis with crusted lashes being one, but it is often due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), where the tiny glands in your eyelids that produce the oil in your tears become blocked. Without this vital oil, tears evaporate too quickly, leading to inflammation and the classic symptoms of dry, gritty, irritated eyes.

Dry eye disease is also exacerbated by ocular allergy, contact lens wear, previous laser refractive surgery, poor sleep, excessive screen use, stress and air travel.

Dry eye is more common in women and people over 50 due to hormonal changes. It can also be associated with certain medical conditions like rosacea and autoimmune diseases, or as a side effect of some medications.

OptiLight IPL is a modern solution that tackles MGD at its source. The powerful yet gentle light pulses calm the inflammatory response that contributes to gland dysfunction and ocular surface damage. The gentle heat from the light softens and liquefies the hardened oils blocking the meibomian glands, allowing them to be cleared and to function normally again.

OptiLight IPL also treats the blood vessels around the eyelids that release inflammatory mediators. By restoring your eye's natural ability to produce healthy tears, OptiLight IPL provides sustained relief from the cycle of dryness and discomfort, helping you see and feel better.
