Scarless ptosis surgery: restoring vision without visible eyelid scars

If you’ve been struggling with drooping eyelids, you’re not alone.

The impact goes far beyond how your eyes look. When drooping eyelids start affecting your vision, everyday activities like reading, driving, or watching television can become genuinely difficult. Not to mention the fatigue of constantly raising your brows or straining to force your eyes open wider.

The good news is that drooping eyelids- medically known as ptosis – can be effectively treated. And with modern surgical techniques, we can restore your unobstructed vision without leaving visible scars.

Understanding ptosis: you’re not imagining it

Ptosis most frequently happens when the muscle responsible for lifting your upper eyelid – the levator muscle – weakens or stretches over time. This is incredibly common as we age, though it can also develop after eye surgery, contact lens overwear, injury, or due to certain medical conditions.

While you might initially notice how your eyes look different, it’s usually the functional problems that prompt people to seek help. And rightly so – these aren’t small inconveniences.

  • Habitually raising your eyebrows to lift your eyelids and deep creases in the forehead as a result
  • Feeling tired and heavy around your eyes or forehead by the end of the day
  • Difficulty reading or driving
  • Your eyes feeling ‘tired’ even when you’re well-rested

If any of this sounds familiar, please know that these can be real functional problems affecting your quality of life. You’re not being overly concerned – you deserve to see clearly and comfortably.

How scarless ptosis surgery is different

I know that one of the main concerns when considering eyelid surgery is the worry about visible scarring. It’s completely understandable – your eyes are one of the first things people notice.

In the scarless approach to ptosis surgery, incisions are not made on the outside of the skin, but rather hidden on the underside of the eyelid. This delicate approach lends itself to discrete results and preserves the natural contour of the eyelids.

Is this right for you?

During your consultation, I’ll carefully assess your specific type of ptosis, check how well your eyelid levator muscle is working, and review your overall eye health. This helps us determine together whether the scarless approach is the right fit for you.

It’s especially suitable if you have:

  • Mild to moderate ptosis where your eyelid muscle still has good function but needs tightening
  • Age-related drooping that has started to affect your daily activities and vision
  • Ptosis after eye surgery such as cataract surgery or other procedures
  • Concerns about visible scarring from traditional surgical approaches

What you can expect from the procedure

I find that knowing what to expect helps ease any anxiety, so let me walk you through the process.

This surgery is performed under local anaesthetic. If you’d prefer, we can also arrange light sedation to help you feel more relaxed. The procedure itself typically takes 30 minutes per eyelid.

Depending on the nature of your work, expect to take 5 days off after surgery to allow for bruising and swelling to improve. You will be required to apply an antibiotic drop or ointment in the eye(s) after surgery.

The pain associated with this surgery is minimal and over-the-counter medications like paracetamol are occasionally needed for comfort. Sometimes the eye can feel a little bit dry or gritty, especially during the first week of healing.

I’ll see you back for a check-up within the first week after surgery, and then at one additional follow-up to make sure everything has healed beautifully.

My experience

Ptosis surgery is my bread and butter. I perform hundreds of these surgeries with consistent results. Because I have dedicated my career to this particular type of surgery, I am highly attuned to the micro-decisions that lead to successful results. As an extension, I have been invited to lecture and chair expert sessions on Ptosis Surgery at prestigious international conferences such as the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Annual Meeting.

I will always show you before and after photos of my surgical work, and I specifically choose examples that are most like your case. This helps you visualise your outcome and ensure our expectations are aligned.
